Keno Don Hugo Rosa (or Don Rosa) will ring so many bells with Disney and comic book lovers that they’ll believe that Santa’s sleigh is passing by really early this year. But ho-ho-ho, you can count on FACTS to hand out the presents in October, before the jolly big guy even starts his tour. And Donald Duck artist Don Rosa is one of the presents you can’t wait to unwrap.
This American artist is best known for his work on Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and other Disney characters. He grew up with Donald and Scrooge comics and when he noticed in 1986 that Gladstone was publishing comics with his favourite characters, he allegedly rang up the editor to say that “he was the only American who was born to write and draw one Scrooge McDuck adventure”. A bold statement, but he delivered. His first Scrooge story, The Son of the Sun, was an instant hit. He later worked for the DuckTales magazine and the Danish publisher Egmont. He may be retired now, but his love for the franchise will probably never end.
And his hard work did not go unnoticed by the comic book industry. For example: he won the Comics’ Buyer’s Guide Award for Favorite Writer in 1997, 1998, and 1999 and the coveted Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story for The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck in 1995. That last piece of art is often said to be his most famous work.
Want to meet Don Rosa in person? Here’s your chance! Visit him at FACTS on the 22nd and 23rd of October in Flanders Expo Ghent!
