Don’t expect ponies and flowers when you pick up one of the masterfully crafted stories of James O’Barr. With series such as The Crow, Gothik and Sundown, O’Barr is more likely to make you nauseous with expert drawings than to make you vomit rainbows.

O’Barr’s number one series is without a doubt The Crow, a dark story about a dead but resurrected young man who embarks on a journey to avenge the death of his girlfriend, who was savagely beaten, raped, and shot in the head.

O’Barr created this series in the early 80’s as a means of dealing with the death of his girlfriend at the hands of a drunk driver in 1979. After being shelved for several years, it was first published by Caliber Comics in 1989. It was adapted into a successful movie in 1994. The series was so popular that it lead to more film sequels, a TV series and books.

Like we said: no ponies and flowers, but you will love every pen stroke and letter.
